The Accredited Central International Certification Unit (ACICU) was formally established in 1980 in the United States, amid a growing international demand for transparent and accountable systems of academic quality assurance. The founding vision of ACICU was to create a globally adaptive, yet locally sensitive, framework of educational evaluation that could respond to the dynamic growth of international higher education institutions—particularly those utilizing emerging technologies in learning.

In response to the rapid expansion of transnational education in Asia, ACICU established its second regional headquarters in British Hong Kong in 1985, aiming to serve institutions across East and Southeast Asia. By the dawn of the new millennium, ACICU had expanded its operations into North America’s academic hub, inaugurating its Toronto office in Canada in 2000.
